Canada PR rules simply stand for the rules that govern and guides permanent residents that are residing in Canada.

What qualifies one to be a permanent resident in Canada?

Well, to be qualified for permanent residency, the following rules have to be followed. They include:

  • As a person wanting to obtain the permanent residency card, you must permanently reside in Canada. This means that those staying in Canada temporarily, such as students, those working for a limited period and so on cannot apply for a permanent resident card.
  • You must be present in Canada. You cannot apply for a permanent resident card when you are not in Canada. It doesn’t work that way. You have to be physically present before you can apply.
  • You are also expected to meet the residency requirements. The requirement is that if you have been permanently residing in Canada for about 5 years, you need to have been in the country for at least 730 days.
  • You must also ensure you are not under any effective removal order. A removal order would be issued to someone who has violated the rules of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. This means if you are found guilty of committing a crime or you got into Canada through fraudulent means and you are caught, you could be issued an effective removal order. This order might be really serious, depending on the gravity of the offense.

You might be asked to leave the country for a whole year, for 30 days or you could be deported.

Anyone found with a removal order cannot apply for a permanent resident card.

  • You must not be a citizen of Canada. This measure is provided for non-Canadian residents and only them. If you are a citizen of Canada, then you have no business applying for a resident card because you would not be granted.
  • You must not be convicted for any offense, and you must not misuse your permanent resident card. If you found misusing it, you would not be allowed to use the permanent resident card anymore.

Adherence to the following rules listed above would grant you a better chance of obtaining a permanent resident card in Canada.

This card would last for 5 years after which it can then be renewed.

As an owner of the PR card, you enjoy many benefits. They are:

  • You get to enjoy many social benefits that many Canadians enjoy including health coverage.
  • You can live anywhere, study anywhere, and even work anywhere in Canada. It depends on you.
  • You are also granted to opportunity to apply for Canadian citizenship.
  • You are also under protection from Canadian law.

The sad thing is that until you’re granted citizenship, you cannot contest for any political position or office. You would have to wait until you are a citizen of Canada. You also cannot work in some high offices that require high-security clearance.

You are also expected to pay your taxes religiously and to respect all the laws of the government.
